Contradmiral Urged US To Respond To Russian Strikes On Ukraine's Energy Sector

Energy sovereignty is the Westphalian principle of the 21st century.

US Navy Rear Admiral Michael Hewitt believes that the United States of America should respond to Russian shelling of Ukrainian energy facilities.

He said this during the second international Black Sea Security Forum in Odessa, according to "European Pravda".

The U.S. admiral believes that the Russians' strikes on energy facilities should be viewed, among other things, through the prism of the economy and the losses that Russia inflicts on Ukraine.

"Energy sovereignty is a Westphalian principle of the 21st century, not borders. And, in my opinion, we see this being realized in Putin's actions - he is attacking Ukraine's energy infrastructure. And in a sense that's what we should be responding to," he said.

He said the U.S. should also focus on working with the economic potential of Ukrainian-American relations.

"And when we get to peace, I would like to see economic interdependence between America and Ukraine, because that's how America's loyalty is maintained. It's not about fighting Putin, it's about the economic value of our two countries," Hewitt concluded.
