Macron Expects US To Impose Sanctions On Russia

French President Emmanuel Macron called on the United States to impose sanctions against aggressor country Russia when it "confirms" that it is "not ready for peace."

Answering a question about the Ukrainian issue, and more specifically about the second round of talks to end the war between Ukraine and Russia, Macron called on Russia and the United States to take responsibility.

If Russia "confirms" that it is "not ready for peace," Washington should reaffirm its "commitment" to sanctions against Moscow, the French president said. He emphasized that "this is a test of confidence for Americans."

"I spoke 48 hours ago with President Trump, who expressed his impatience. The question now is: what do we do about it? We (Europeans - ed) are ready," he added.

With regard to the European position on finalizing the ceasefire, the French president reiterated confidence in the Europeans.

"They are consistent and reliable. We have not changed, we still believe in the international order, in cooperation, in open trade and in respecting the rules," he also stated.
