A Container Ship Carrying Hazardous Cargo Sank In The Arabian Sea

The Liberian-flagged container ship Sujata sank in the Arabian Sea with dangerous cargo on board, the Indian Coast Guard's press office said on its X page.

The vessel sank off the coast of the Indian city of Cochin on the morning of May 24. 21 of the 24 crew members were rescued.

"The ship was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with dangerous goods and 12 with calcium carbide. In addition, the vessel's tanks contained 84.44 tons of diesel fuel and 367.1 tons of heating oil," the report said.

The Coast Guard is prepared to respond in case of pollution. The agency's aircraft are conducting assessments of the affected area. No oil spill has been reported so far.

The container ship left Vizhinjam port in Thiruvananthapuram, it was bound for Cochin and was scheduled to arrive on May 24.
