Military Conscription In Germany Could Be Back As Early As Next Year

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the country may consider resuming military conscription as early as next year if it fails to recruit the required number of volunteers for the armed forces

"Our model is initially based on voluntary participation. If there comes a time when we have more options than voluntary registration, then we may decide to make it mandatory," Pistorius said.

He said the new bill could come into effect as early as January 1, 2026.

The commander of Germany's internal security department, Andreas Henne, also supported conscription.

"We have started on the right track, but now we need to accelerate the pace. In terms of equipment, infrastructure expansion and above all personnel," he said.
