The U.S. President spoke about the reasons for this decision.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to impose duties of 50% on imports of goods from the European Union from June 1, 2025.

He announced this on Truth Social, accusing the EU of creating unfair trade conditions for U.S. manufacturers.

Trump said the EU was created to benefit from trade with the U.S., but has become too difficult and unfavorable a partner. He cited trade barriers, high value-added taxes, fines against US companies, currency manipulation and unjustified lawsuits among the reasons for the imposition of duties.

Trump emphasized that because of such measures, the US trade deficit with the EU exceeds $250 million a year, which is unacceptable. According to him, negotiations have failed, so he proposes to impose direct duties of 50%, which will not affect goods made in the U.S.
