The decision was made by the country's Cabinet of Ministers at a visiting meeting in Narva.

The Estonian government has launched the preparation of the state special planning and strategic environmental impact assessment for the possible construction of a 600-megawatt nuclear power plant (NPP), err.ee reports.

The Cabinet made this decision on Thursday, May 22, at its retreat meeting held in Narva.

The initiative was initiated by Fermi Energia, which submitted the relevant application on January 14. The aim of the project is to determine the best place for construction and assess the possible impact on the environment, economy and local population.

The planned area covers more than 1200 square kilometers - the territories of Lääne-Viru County and Ida-Viru County, as well as the sea area from Kunda Bay to Narva Bay. Local residents, authorities and various stakeholders will be involved in the planning process.

The actual construction site will be much smaller, however - the planning covers a larger area for a comprehensive assessment of possible options.

"The start of the planning does not mean the immediate construction of the nuclear power plant. We will first carefully analyze where and under what conditions it can be located," emphasized Minister of Economy and Industry Erkki Keldo (Reform Party).

If things develop positively, the first reactor of the plant may be commissioned no earlier than 2035. The construction of two reactors as well as related infrastructure, including a 330 kV power transmission line, is envisaged.

The legal framework related to nuclear safety will be developed in parallel with the preliminary site selection.
