North Korea suffered a "serious accident" on Wednesday. During the launching ceremony of a new destroyer overseen by the country's leader Kim Jong-un, the vessel was accidentally damaged.

It was reported by Bloomberg.

The incident was due to "inexperienced command and operational negligence." As a result of the incident, some sections of the warship's keel were destroyed and the bow section failed to leave the shipping slipway.

Kim vowed to deal with those responsible for the "irresponsible mistakes" at a plenum of the Party Central Committee to be held in June. He also ordered the ship's repairs to be completed by next month.

Kim unveiled the new 5,000-ton destroyer last month. He said it was a significant step forward toward his goal of expanding the operational range and possible preemptive strike of his armed forces with nuclear weapons.

The North Korean leader said the arms buildup was a response to perceived threats from the United States and its allies in Asia, which have been expanding joint military exercises amid rising tensions over North Korea's nuclear program. He added that the acquisition of a nuclear-powered submarine would be his next big step in strengthening his navy.
