It is a monumental reflection on life, love, creativity and inspiration.

Several paintings by Marc Chagall sold this week during an evening auction of contemporary art by auction houses Sotheby's and Christie's. One of them went under the hammer for almost $3.5 million, the other - for almost six million, according to the website Christie's.

In particular, for $3.438 million sold "The Joy of the Circus," which the native of Belarus finished two years before his death, in 1983. He was 98 years old at the time, and he lived in the French commune of Saint-Paul-de-Vence on the Côte d'Azur. The painting was estimated at auction at $1.8-2.5 million dollars.

The description says that at that time Chagall was in a state of complete peace, reflecting on his long and successful career. The paintings of this period are filled with dreaminess and joy, with expressive, dancing brushstrokes. In "The Joy of the Circus," patches of color seem to be illuminated by theatrical spotlights, enhancing the sense of spectacle and performance in the arena.

In the meantime, another epic painting by Marc Chagall, Autour de Vence ("The Vicinity of Vence"), sold for 5.979 million; it was estimated at three to five million. It was painted between 1955 and 1957, and is a monumental reflection on life, love, creativity and inspiration.

Also at Christie's auction sold his painting La Mer ("The Sea") for 945 thousand dollars. It was painted in 1945.
