Politico: EU Considering Full Trade Embargo Against Russia

  • 16.05.2025, 13:15

The goal is to deliver a "knockout blow" to the Russian economy.

Following Russia's rejection of a 30-day ceasefire on the frontline, a full trade embargo is one option to pressure Moscow.

This is reported by Politico.

After Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's rejection of a silence regime, diplomats say European Union (EU) and British leaders are looking for ways to deliver a "knockout blow" to the Russian economy.

According to Politico, the plan under discussion is inspired by a proposal by Republican Lindsey Graham, who suggested imposing 500% sanctions on Russian exports. Potential measures against Moscow could include tariffs on Russian exports or a full trade embargo.

Although Graham is unlikely to get support from White House Chief of Staff Donald Trump for sanctions restrictions against Russia, Ukraine's supporters could push their own "megapackage" without U.S. involvement.

Politico adds that today, May 16, EU countries and their neighbors, among them Ukraine and the UK, are gathering in Albania for the sixth European Political Community (EPC) summit.

European Political Community

EPC is a platform created in 2022 for political and strategic dialogue on the future of Europe. The initiative emerged after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The first meeting of the ENP took place in October 2022 in Prague, where representatives of 44 European countries, as well as the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission gathered.
